MALEBRANCHE ON TRUE BLOOD
From Alan Ball, the creator of the wonderful series “Six Feet Under,” comes a new HBO series “True Blood” presenting a unique twist on vampire mythology. Reverend Malebranche was commissioned to paint several images on black velvet which are used as decor for a vampire bar.
We will be watching with interest to see how one of our favorite archetypes is handled, and it will be a pleasure to catch a glimpse or two of our Reverend’s fine artwork.

“Samurai Killer” in South Africa
We have been approached by journalists and other curious people as to our take on a recent incident where an apparently mentally disturbed student at the Nic Diederichs Technical High School attacked others there, killing one and wounding several, and it has been reported that he claimed that Satan told him to do it. It has also been reported that he listened to the band Slipknot (I’m not familiar with their music) and imitated a costume worn by one of the band members during his crime.
It has been recorded that senior superintendent Gerard Labuschagne, the head of the Krugersdorp police’s investigative psychology unit had this to say: “Whenever there is a murder, people jump to conclusions, and always God or Satan told the killers to do it. These notions shouldn’t be taken seriously because it is straightforward: someone, of their own free will, can kill another person.” I must concur with this wise point of view. Having read a couple of articles on this crime, I currently see no relation to Satanism in this incident. Certainly such killings are contrary to the philosophy of Satanism. There is no reasonable way to speculate as to what actually motivated this student to commit his crimes at this point. Until one had detailed statements by him or had the chance to interview him, any opinion would simply be pure theory, and weak theory at that since it wouldn’t be based on any significant data.
The following text is from an essay in my book The Satanic Scriptures called “Victors and Victims: From West Memphis to Columbine” which deals with the topic of Satanism and disturbed students by commenting on the Columbine incident, where the killers were known to be intelligent and creative by the school officials and their fellow students:
One thing might have helped defuse the situation: Satanism. If Klebold and Harris had understood real Satanism and chosen to live by it, their vengeance spree would not have happened. Satanism would have taught them that, indeed, they were not like these others, and that such is a positive attribute. Satanism would have taught them that they had only one life, and that their intelligence and talent would take them along paths which would lead to their drinking deeply from that cup which is offered but once. They would have known that Satanists practice Lex Talionis, making the punishment fit in kind and degree the crime. With their superior intelligence, they should have been able to respond to taunting with verbal wit, and made responsible administrators aware of their pain. They would see that the herd cannot help their nature, and that the human who really flows with Nature learns to walk nimbly between these ponderous golems, to snatch the bounties that the dullards will never even see. The Satanist finds a way to prevent the torture, and means to be free to prosper, as living well is truly the best revenge. If these two had a Satanist’s perspective, they would not have seen the transitory period of High School as being such an insurmountable burden, and they would not have been compelled to commit heinous acts against innocent victims.
Instead, they saw no way out, and thus made their last stand, and perhaps did so as a gesture for those they thought to be like themselves. They are now icons for the alienated, and an example that sets up an Is-To-Be that desperate others may follow. Satanism can stop it. Satanism sees the futility of martyrdom, as what matter is it becoming a symbol while losing your own life? To the Satanist, his own life is the most precious. Let fools die and become symbols. Self-immolation is “herd think,” Christian life’s blood—the essence of their creed. And so in this siege, they essentially finally adopted the herd’s premise that one’s own life can and should be thrown away.
Additionally, the idea that any sort of music—whether somebody considers it “extreme,” “Satanic” or not—could influence behavior of a sane individual to commit acts not congruent with their character and beliefs is complete nonsense. People are not robots who can be programmed into behaving in certain ways simply by listening to music. If that was the case, then we could broadcast positive tunes with happy messages that would make everyone behave like nice little cheerful automatons. That just doesn’t happen. Individuals who have mental illnesses on the other hand can be influenced by anything, from a leaf falling to seeing secret messages in alphabet soup. You cannot base the validity of any aesthetic expression—be it music, art, literature, film, poetry—on whether a mentally unstable person has subsequently used it as motivation for insane acts. Responsibility does not lie with the artist or art form, it rests on the person who was looking for any excuse to justify the behavior in question.
People are horrified when a person snaps and kills innocent victims and they look for easy answers—there are none. At such times of shock and grief it is important not to scapegoat a song or a band or a religion to get a quick answer. Studying what happened over the course of the disturbed person’s life might give some clue as to why that person finally acted in such horrific ways, but the responsibility for each person’s actions must stay with the person themselves and not be fobbed off on something else to make the victims feel better by providing an excuse. There is no excuse or simple cause when an irrational person explodes in violence. The emotional trauma has no simple or quick fixes. To think otherwise is classic lynch-mob mentality which has no place in a sane society.
Finally, there is no inherent danger in participating in many minority religions or sub-cultures and that would include being a fan of particular musical genres. People should remember that most of the present majority religions and above-ground cultural forms began as small niche associations which were rejected or misunderstood and over time those that had values that drew in more followers ultimately graduated to become the major generators of mass beliefs and societal mores. If a particular religion has life-threatening actions as part of its practices—such as the evangelical Christian sects that handle poisonous snakes—then that would be an exception and could be seen as being dangerous. The sexual sub-culture that practices auto-erotic asphyxiation would also been seen the same way. I’d add to that any sub-culture that encourages the use of addictive substances. But outside of those rare exceptions, no, there’s no inherent danger in simply being part of something that is not embraced by the majority.
The only historical exception to that would be if one were in a culture wherein the majority had the power to put you to death for not sharing their beliefs—which was the situation for much of the past two thousand years when Christian churches worked with governments to exterminate anyone they considered to be heretics. That bloody history should not be ignored. Christianity—with its central image of a father God sacrificing his only son as well as offering rituals which claim to be the eating of their savior’s flesh and the drinking of his blood—is currently considered to be harmless when in fact it previously was the motivating force behind centuries of slaughtering innocent people. We Satanists never forget that fact. Satanism, unlike Christianity, does not advocate murder of those who think differently. Satanism embraces life, since it is fleeting and precious. For us, enjoying the one life we have is our goal and sharing it with the people we cherish our pleasure.

This set of two cassettes was released in 1986. 19 international bands contributed one "Key" each to form this compilation. Every track was recorded exclusively for this project, and remember that all of the music here was made with real instruments, analog synthesizers and - effects without computers, digital recording, editing and mastering whatsoever.
Our works concerning the 19 Enochian Keys have generated from 19 visual works and a film by AMVK, initially based on the opposition of the 19 Keys versus the films of Alfred Hitchcock, in particular the "39 Steps".
The live calling of the 19 Keys featured as a soundtrack when the film was shown on various occasions. A cassette resulted from the first showing at ProduKtion-HAIR in London in June 1983, and in the meantime the film is also made available on video. Throughout our work and the response of our audiences towards the 19 Keys, we have formed the idea of presenting an ultimate version, based on world-wide approaches. We have asked 19 international bands, whose soundwork we appreciate at most, to call out one Key each, adding to it appropriate sounds in order to obtain the most powerful force each Key possesses.
After over a year of intense creation and delicate recording, we are now then proud to offer you the ultimate 19 Enochian Keys...

The windows to the fourth dimension are thrown open - and to the frightened, the Gates of Hell.
Apocryphal as they have become (and who can tell what grim reality provokes the "fantasy"), the Enochian Keys are the Satanic paeans of faith. Dispensing with such once-pragmatic whitewashing in terms such as "holy" and "angelic", and arbitrarily chosen groups of numbers, the purpose of which were only to act as substitutes for "blasphemous" words.
The magical language used in Satanic rituals is Enochian, a language thought to be older that Sanskrit with a sound grammatical and syntactical basis. The meaning of the words, combined with the quality of the words, unite to create a pattern of sound which can cause tremendous reaction in the atmosphere. The barbaric tonal qualities of this language give it a truly magical effect which cannot be described.
We would like to dedicate this work to Anton Szandor LaVey, from whose "Satanic Bible" (Avon Books 1969) the TRUE Enochian Keys are recited.

Some information on the bands (clickable links on the Club Moral Stocklist webpage): DDV is still alive. Coup De Grace played at the In Vitro II event, did a tour with Club Moral as backing band throughout Belgium, Holland and Germany and continues to play and record as Blood Axis. He collaborated with Boyd Rice and lives and works with Annabel Lee. ProduKtion made several films, organised an Australian tour for Club Moral in 1987 and then disappeared out of sight (Paul, where are you?). Vittore Baroni continues to work as a mail artist. Sevenhorns dA Ho! recorded a couple of rare cassettes, played at the In Vitro I series and disappeared out of sight. The Brides of Christ released a number of cassettes on their own label and disappeared out of sight. (Jo) Bogaert became quite successful with his other band Technotronic, Hugo Roelandt made some installations and works as a teacher. FâLX çêrêbRi aka Graf Haufen had a successful distribution company of music and video and is still around in Berlin. 6de Kolonne seem to continue to work and archive their work until today. Pacific 231 continues his music works, now from Ireland. Autopsia published a lot of artwork and several cassettes and disappeared out of sight. Augusto Klamm is probably out there somewhere. Kurt Volentine made some of the greatest cut-up-collage tapes and videos in the pre-digital era and has disappeared out of sight. Gerechtigkeitsliga are still out there in London. Mauthausen Orchestra is still out there somewhere. Lard have published several cassettes and continue te record. Ydde Nesnay is totally out of sight. AR/TE supposedly lives in Berlin. AMVK continues to work. Anton LaVey passed away on 29 October 1997.
A restored version of original artworks by AMVK on the 19 Enochian Keys will be featured in an exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern as of 15 August 2008. The Kunstmuseum is organising a large retrospective of AMVK's drawings and films in co-operation with Wiels in Brussels. The movie "39 Steps vs. 19 Keys" will also be shown in the museum. At the opening night in Luzern there will be a dj-set by none other than Carl Cryplant.

GEORGE CARLIN
(May 12, 1937-June 22, 2008)
Yesterday, the maestro of misanthropy died of a heart attack at age 71. Carlin was a deeply carnal comedian, lampooning the numerous foibles of the human animal. He wryly observed the madness of our species, noting most people’s frequent irrationality in thought and action. He was a foe of prudery, censorship, and organized religion, all of which he saw as part of humanity’s “bullshit.” The tendency for polite society to create euphemisms masking the truth about subjects being discussed was a frequent target of his sharp wit. American culture was continually skewered in his routines. Taboo topics and sacred cows were the meat of his comedy. He championed free speech, sexual indulgence, and personal joy in being alive. Many of his attitudes, particularly those expressed in his later specials for HBO, are decidedly congruent with Satanic perspectives—his inclusion on the dedication page of The Satanic Scriptures was amply merited.
Some choice words:
“I look at it this way, for centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers—so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it’s natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse.”

Longtime fans of HP Lovecraft, the artists at Arkham Studios have crafted the quintessential sculpture of the Old Gent from Providence.
Standing approximately 12 inches high, the expertly sculpted countenance of HP Lovecraft sits atop an antique style base with curved scrolls and filigrees, not unlike the aesthetic of Lovecraft himself. At the face of the base is a small plaque which reads “I Am Providence” and signed in Lovecraft’s own signature beneath.
Lovecraft fans may note that “I Am Providence” was originally written by Lovecraft to a friend describing his love for his hometown and is now his epitaph on his tombstone. Centuries ago in an obscure tome entitled “The Gospel According To St. Anthony”, Satan himself used these very words to tempt St. Anthony. Knowing Arkham Studios’ penchant for all things Satanic, it’s no surprise that this classic portrait of Lovecraft fits right in with their dark repertoire of occult, horror, and literary figures.

As each year passes the structure being built on the mighty foundation of your creation continues to rise in typhonian splendor. The deep intuitions that informed your choices reached a flash point and a blazing inferno was ignited so properly in the name of Satan, god of the flesh and apt avatar for we carnal iconoclasts. Thus the Church of Satan blossomed like the dread mushroom cloud, shattering the occultnik meanderings and pagan pulings which passed at that time for alternatives to the Nazarene milksop and his pallid spiritual brethren.
He meant this as a gift to his kin, we who are born to the nature of the gentleman-beast, who reconcile civilization and savagery as we are in tune with our nature and see the workings of society and Nature with utmost clarity. We accept his offering, embracing the moniker of Satanist with pride, but moreover we acknowledge this as a truthful insight into precisely who and what we are.
And on this anniversary of the birth of Magus Anton Szandor LaVey, we affirm our commitment to maintain the clarity of his thinking, refusing to let those sloppy devil fans and shabby coattail riders sully the integrity of our rational, atheistic, and dramatic philosophy.

Last Rites Gallery Brings the New York Art World Over to the Dark Side
On April 5th, the New York art scene is going to get a lot darker. Legendary painter and tattoo artist Paul Booth, of Last Rites Tattoo Theatre, is opening up NYC's only gallery devoted to the macabre, erotic and surreal.
Last Rites Gallery's inaugural show, Transgression, curated by gallery director Genevive Zacconi, showcases artists ranging from internationally renowned sculptor and Alien designer HR Giger to classical oil painter Shawn Barber, to tattoo-artist Vincent Castiglia, whose beautifully rendered watercolors are painted in his own blood. Designed to provoke thoughts and shatter taboos, Transgression will introduce viewers to 31 artists who change what we think art is.

A tattoo artist for nearly two decades and a painter for years before that, Paul Booth has devoted his life to the evolution of his craft. In the tattoo industry, after years of public appearances and numerous international awards, Paul Booth is now a household name. He has been featured on networks such as CNN, MSNBC, DISCOVERY, A&E, TLC, and MTV.
