Today is the final “Friday the 13th” of 2020. As keen observers of those around us, we Satanists have long enjoyed the consternation this number conjures amongst the superstitious. On the occasion of this “dreaded day” we bring to mind that Satanism advocates rational approaches towards how we interact with the world in which we live, and that our philosophy supports science over faith towards guiding our decisions and actions. In this time of ongoing global fear, privation, and irrational behavior regarding what is being called a "second wave" of the pandemic caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus, I continue to urge that reason, caution and sensibility be your guides. Seek out information from trusted sources for worthy consideration as you judge how to proceed. We Satanists are often misanthropes—we tread very carefully when we are out amongst other humans. And we avoid interactions with "the herd" whenever feasible. Our general approach to socializing has proven ever more valid in the strife caused by this plague. When possible, enjoy being at home away from the hubbub of the madding crowds. Crack open that book you’ve been meaning to read; listen to music that rouses your joy; build that model that has been awaiting your attention; view some choice videos from your watch lists; tackle those home repair projects and clear your “to do” lists; complete that crafting project that has lingered unfinished; sketch portraits of your family members of all species and, if you are able, prepare something nourishing and delicious for yourself and any who might be sharing your citadel. If you are in an area with interesting trails or other stimulating walkways, a jog, hike, or walk to enjoy Nature’s splendors or any interesting architecture might also be invigorating. And, if one’s employers are amenable, continued working from home is an option that could be wisely exercised. Of course, some private time for indulging in “self pleasure” might also be considered—we’ve read that it might boost one’s immune system and has the well known effect of enhancing one’s sense of well-being. Be creative, contemplative, and stay sane while those about you are not. May you enjoy the treasures you’ve gathered in your ebony towers in splendid purposeful seclusion.
