Church of Satan Sigil of Baphomet

Manifestos of M’lle New York by Vance Thompson

M’lle New York was a journal of arts and literature published in New York City 1895-1896. Editors Vance Thompson (1863-1925) and James Huneker (1857-1921) introduced important fin-de-siècle personalities to the Americas, among them Knut Hamsun, Stanislaw Przybyszewski, Edward Munch, Ibsen, and Verlaine.
This anthology of essays from M’lle New York is printed in a strictly limited run of sixty-six numbered copies. For the first time in a century, you may now read Thompson’s dynamite editorials in print. His work is a veritable flamethrower against democracy, egalitarianism, the undifferentiated masses—the spooks of liberalism.
Thompson published nearly twenty other titles, including a wry short work titled The Ego Book. He was undoubtedly influenced by the man that James Huneker introduced to the Americas by way of the New York Times: Max Stirner, author of The Unique and Its Property.

—Kevin I. Slaughter

Manifestos of M’lle New York features illustrations by Thomas Fleming and Thomas Powers as well as a translation by Vance Thompson of a choice selection from Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evil. Introduction by James Huneker, never before made available in this form.

“Unlike (Robert) Reitzel and (Benjamin R.) Tucker, who employed Nietzsche for their anarchism of the Left, Thompson utilized Nietzsche for his aristocratism of the Right… Thompson employed Nietzsche as a fellow patrician pessimist whose philosophy confirmed that America would remain a ‘bankrupt’ democracy as long as it mistook equality for necessity, feared individuality as a threat to order, and denatured its thinkers in order to keep the masses ignorant and content.”

—Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen, American Nietzsche
